TOP 5 CHEER and DANCE TRYOUT TIPS

  1. Do your homework!!

Joining a team is a huge commitment, and you want to make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into before you tryout. Does the team compete? When are their practices? How much is the financial commitment? These are all the questions that you need to know the answers to before you even show up to the tryout clinics. You also need to know the appropriate practice and tryout apparel. Make sure you know before you go!!

  2. Get there early and warm up properly.

So many athletes are guilty of jumping into their sport without warming their bodies up and this is one of the number one causes of injury. Stretching your muscles is so important to your body and your mind so get in the practice space early and properly warm your body up before the practice clinics and tryouts. You will be glad you did.

  3. Practice makes perfect…practice, practice, practice.

Once you have those cheers or that dance choreography, you must PRACTICE! Write it down and become one with it. Stay late with a friend, come early, find a veteran to work with. Do whatever is necessary to make sure you are very confident with the material you will be judged on.

  4. First impressions are everything.

Your performance starts as soon as you step onto the gym floor, not when the music or cheer starts, so be sure you are smiling and exuding ALL confidence! Remember, the judges only see you for two and a half minutes so you must give them your best from START to FINISH!! And that means as soon as they see you.

  5. If you make a mistake, keep smiling!

Recovering from adversity in any situation is key and that is the same in cheer and dance! All judges understand that you just learned choreography four days ago, so sometimes nerves get to you, but it’s all about how you recover from those “uh oh” moments. So, keep those shoulders back and chin lifted and own that moment! You will get major points from your judging panel.

And a bonus tip…HAVE FUN!!

Enjoy this experience. You are trying out because you love to cheer or dance and you want to be a part of something great, so have a good time while you are going through the process. GOOD LUCK!!
