Coaching, or being in charge of a team (any team), takes a lot out of a person! No matter how many years you’ve been coaching, reviewing things that help your squad run smoothly are always helpful. Here are some tips to keep you sane, satisfied, and successful this cheer season!
#1 – Keep your squad motivated!
Use the beginning or end of your practice time to review goals that you may have set up at summer camp. Remind them of the reason they are there – to raise school spirit, cheer on your team, and most importantly, be leaders and role models for others.
#2 – Keep things fun!
Although the stress of school, football and competition season may be getting to your squad, make a conscious effort to keep a healthy balance of work and play. Cutting into the intense practice sessions with some fun team-building activities can help keep everyone’s spirits up!
#3 – Take some time for yourself!
Even the most experienced coach can feel overwhelmed at times. Fuel yourself with healthy foods, take an exercise or yoga class, or just settle in to a good book or magazine. Keeping a healthy body and mind will allow you to be a better coach.
#4 – Stay organized!
Keep a master calendar of all practices, games, events, competitions, etc. for the entire season in a visible place such as your desk or prominent wall.
#5 – Use the available technology!
Set up a team website where your squad can access calendars, add pictures or learn new routines/cheers/chants through posted videos. There are even apps for your smart phone that can remind your squad and parents about important upcoming events! See what is out there and it can make your life easier!
